Association between Obesity and Periodontitis in US Adults: NHANES 2011–2014. Obesity Facts. Advance online publication. https://doi.org/10.1159/000534751
The search was conducted using keywords such as "obesity," "periodontitis," and "the connection between obesity and periodontal disease" to explore research in the field. This led to academic databases like PubMed, where the focus was refined to papers involving U.S. citizens to ensure relevance to the interest. After carefully considering the available options, a recent paper was selected that specifically investigated the association between obesity and periodontitis in the U.S. population, ensuring it had full-text access.

Comparative Assessment of the Periodontal Findings in Child Subjects With a Normal Body Mass Index and in Obese Subjects. Cureus, 15(10), e47897. https://doi.org/10.7759/cureus.47897
Relevant keywords such as "periodontal findings," "obese subjects," and the "connection of periodontal disease and obesity" were used. After reading the abstracts of many papers, the decision was made to explore a different aspect of the research by incorporating the concept of "child subjects." This allowed for an examination of the impact of obesity on periodontal health specifically in the pediatric population.

Association between overweight/obesity and periodontitis in adults: A systematic review. Obesity Reviews. Advance online publication. https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1467-789X.2010.00808.x
The search was conducted using the same keyword, "association between obesity and periodontitis/periodontal disease." However, most encountered papers did not offer free access to the full text. After reviewing the abstracts of several research papers, despite being a decade old, this study provided a more unique viewpoint and was accessible in full text. The intention was to use this paper to investigate how knowledge on the topic has evolved over the past ten years.
